Support Our Team
On March 24th 2018, only 6 weeks after celebrating her first birthday our dear sweet Morgan ended up in the ER at Surrey Memorial hospital. What was misdiagnosed days previous as just a worsening case of the flu turned out to be DKA, a very serious condition that develops when your body does not produce enough insulin. It was on that day that Morgan was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
The next 3 days were a blur as Andrea and Daryl were with Morgan around the clock as the doctors worked to slowly bring her blood sugar down to a safer level. On the 4th day and feeling a lot better, Morgan was transferred to Children’s Hospital where Mom and Dad and Grandma would receive their diabetes training.
After dealing with the initial shock of the diagnosis her family has begun adjusting to life with diabetes. Morgan couldn’t have better parents than Andrea and Daryl and big brother Miles.
We have all been amazed at their ability to take in an overwhelming amount of information that they received from the intensive training at Children’s Hospital. We are so grateful for the support of the nurse educators, dieticians, and endocrinologists who continue to support them via email and who are just a phone call away in the event of an emergency. In just 4 short weeks, Andrea and Daryl have had to become experts in diabetes management.
While there have been many advances in the treatment of diabetes such as continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps none of these are available to Morgan due to her young age and size.
But this is not a sad story. What we have is hope. On Sunday June 3 we will be participating in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes. JDRF is the largest non-profit funder of type1 diabetes research in the world with a mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. With your help we can turn type 1 into type NONE.
Thank you for donating and making a difference for Morgan.
