Welcome to the page of Sandra Smith
This November 2018, I rode 140 kms in the "Revolution Ride to Defeat Diabetes" where 385 of us raised US$2,000,000 to move research forward to hopefully find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. If you're able to contribute, please support my fundraiser here which goes to the JDRF* (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) — a global organization striving to END Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), a serious autoimmune disease that affects millions of children and adults who are dependent on daily insulin injections to stay alive.
Nov 4, after-ride update: 9 hours at 7,000 feet, riding against a headwind much of the time with a total of 4,100 feet of uphill - whew!
Why I am asking
As you may know, I have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of my life. Type 1 (insulin-dependent) Diabetes has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle, and there is nothing you can do to prevent it – because we still don’t know the cause. It requires constant management, minute to minute... carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose checking, exercise managing and a lifelong dependence on injected insulin. Insulin has given Type 1 Diabetics like me the gift of life. But it is not a cure. Living on injected insulin is a complex, frustrating, sometimes scary, 24/7 challenge to straighten out a roller coaster of blood sugar highs and lows which are affected by a myriad of variables. It comes with a greater probability of serious complications which we've all heard about such as kidney failure, blindness, stroke, amputations and worse...
The GOOD news is that fundraisers like this are helping to improve lives and make great research advances. We're getting better at this and we're beating the odds! The BAD news is that Type 1 Diabetes is now on the rise and threatens to become an epidemic. You no longer need be a “juvenile” to get it (hence the change in this organization's name). More and more adults aged 20-60+ are now being diagnosed with this life-impacting condition.
We need a cure.
With your help, we will achieve JDRF’s vision of a world without Type 1 Diabetes. Researchers are making headway, but they are underfunded and need our support! They are competing against a mega-billion dollar industry and pressure from Pharmaceuticals to keep the focus on developing expensive gadgets to “manage” (rather than “cure”) diabetes.
Thank you, again, for your support!
