Hi, I’m Max Domi. I play in the NHL and I have been living with type 1 diabetes since I was 12 years old. I’m excited to be the National Spokesperson for JDRF Canada and want to encourage all Canadians living with type 1 to join the Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF. This is the 25th anniversary of the Walk so join us – tell your story, make some noise and raise awareness for type 1 diabetes!

Start or join a team and help find a cure! And if you can’t make it out to an event, then walk virtually,– raise funds and help make a difference in the lives of people living with type 1.

What is a Virtual Walk?

A Sun Life Virtual Walk can be done anytime and anywhere. You choose when and where you walk – indoors on a treadmill, outdoors at your local park, or just around your neighbourhood – it’s up to you.

It’s easy to get started. Just set a goal of walking a total of 150 KM any time before October 31, 2018. Start fundraising and track your progress.

A: A Virtual Walk can be done anytime and anywhere, and allows you to participate in the Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF if there is no physical Walk event in your area or if you are not able to participate in the Walk event day in your area. You choose when and where you walk, whether indoors on a treadmill or outdoors at the local park; you decide when and where and how you want to participate.
A: Simply register for the Sun Life Virtual Walk and complete your Walk anytime and anywhere you desire, and upload your number of steps to our website. Once you register you will have access to a bib that you can print off if you wish to wear it while you walk. You don’t have to wear your bib if you don’t want to but it is available if you would like to wear it.
 
A: The Sun Life Virtual Walk will capture participants’ steps before October 31, 2018. If you are unable to count steps during that period, please contact your local JDRF office for other options.
 
A: Absolutely! We encourage participants of all ages and ability levels to participate.
 
A: Yes! With the Sun Life Virtual Walk, we encourage each participant to commit to counting steps towards their goal. As a registered participant, you will use the honour system and track your steps on a fitness device of your choice, and upload your steps onto our website. Once you register, you will have access to a bib that you can print and wear while walking as well as to be part of the Sun Life Virtual Walk community.
 
A: Our goal, through the fundraising efforts of our participants, is to contribute $50,000 to our national Walk goal of raising $5.4 million to help support critical T1D research. We are confident that each participant can raise $150 and are pleased to offer support/advice on achieving and exceeding your goal! Participants raising the suggested minimum fundraising amount of $150 will receive a Sun Life Virtual Walk pin. Virtual Walkers that raise $1,000 or more are also eligible for other exclusive fundraising rewards.
A: No. Most participants will spread the distance out over the span of a month or more. The Sun Life Virtual Walk is less about hard rules than providing motivation to help with your personal goal setting, while raising money for T1D research in the process. So set your goal – whatever that may be – and go out and accomplish it! If that means you need to walk one hour three times a week for one month or spread out the walking until October 31, 2018, so be it. Just track your steps and enter your steps walked as you complete them.
